Originally invented before the turn of the 19th century, chainless bicycles
were extremely popular because no clothing could get caught in the chains
causing an abrupt stop or accident. But these single-gear bicycles fell out
of favor once the new chain-driven, multi-gear models appeared that made
pedaling so much easier.
Now, with new manufacturing technology, bicycle makers have constructed a
chainless mechanism with seven gears. This is an ideal choice for trail
riders or city commuters, as they have about 85 percent of the gear range of
a 21-speed chain bicycle, making them easy to pedal.

Chainless bicycles are much safer and more reliable than standard bicycles
because there is no possibility of the chain skipping off the rear
derailleurs and locking the pedals, or trouser legs getting caught up in the
chains. Chainless bicycles are shaft driven: the pedals spin the internal
shaft mechanism, which in turn powers the back wheel. With this enclosed
mechanism the bicycle requires little maintenance.
